Please meet my friend Darya
 Very Special Little Girl
Please help provide her special food

Darya Zapatolek is now 7 years old and reasonably healthy. That is not the case for the 160 other children in Belarus who suffer from the genetic disorder Phenylketonuria ( PKU).
Darya is a PKU sufferer I have helped from when she almost died at the age of just six weeks.
Her body cannot metabolise protein components and so she must rely on a very very expensive artificial protein diet. If she eats any protein ( milk, dairy produce, meat, eggs, fish, bread etc) then she will suffer irreversible brain damage and like many other PKU children in Belarus end up in a dreadful mental institution.
If she were on the same special diet that her British counterparts receive it would be costing between £2500 and £4000 per annum. The artificial protein mix is around £60 per tin of 500gms.She needs at least 1.5 tins per week for a full diet. A special PKU pack of biscuits or a single loaf of PKU bread costs around £5.00.  The breakfast cereal in the picture is also around £7.00 per packet.
Unfortunately Darya's problems do not end there. Her parents are divorced but still live together in a very small apartment as neither can afford to move out. Her father is an alcoholic and can be violent.
Darya also suffers for kidney problems and her devoted mother Olga suffers from both kidney and gall stones.
To see this lovely little girl  develop over the first seven years of her life has given me a great deal of joy and satisfaction. It has been possible thanks to the donations of generous friends and various organisations chipping in their bit.
The web-site you are now viewing came about partly as a means of funding more much needed supplies for Darya.
Crafts of Russia is not a registered charity and so I do not ask for money but if you do want to help please contact me for details.

Tell me how much you want to give to help buy Darya's food. I will E-mail a list of her requirements and costs and you make out your cheque to the supplier. That way you can be sure that EVERY PENNY you give is used for what you intended. No administration charges , no fees , no delivery costs. ( Crafts of Russia picks up that bill).
